I had severe Dupyturen’s contractures on both of my hands. I had surgery done on the right hand in Feb 2005 by a local orthopedic surgeon which gave me about a 50% return on the right hand. In the work I do, I have to wear Nitrile gloves to protect my hands from chemicals. The Dupyturen’s caused problems with putting on the gloves. 
 

My wife is a RN and one of the women in the professional group she is in, was telling my wife about the new treatment for Dupyturen’s contractures. We searched around and found that Dr. St.Mary was in on the start in using XIAFLEX. We also found out that the cost for the treatment was costly, but insurance companies were looking at this type of treatment to replace the surgery path.   My insurance company paid for the total cost of the treatment.
 

We contacted Dr. St Mary’s office and went in for a consultation and we decided to do my left hand first. This was in November 2010. My left hand had gone from straight to around a 140 to 150 degree bend on the finger;  after the injection and the following day’s visit to a straighten the finger.  I now have almost a fully straightened finger on the left hand.
 

The right hand ,which had surgery had contracted again and the bend on the right finger was back to around 100 to 120 degree bend. We decided to wait until the New Year to have the right hand treated. In January 2011 I went in and had the right hand injected with XIAFLEX and the following day went back and had the finger straightened out. Again the finger returned back to the straight position with a very small bend of around 5 degrees. Both fingers have been treated and after the recovery period there is no pain on either finger. I can now put on the Nitrile gloves I need for work with little to no effort.
 

I personally endorse this treatment and am very thankful that XIAFLEX was discovered and that Dr. St Mary has chosen to offer this type of treatment for Dupyturen’s contractures.
